With joy and thanksgiving, the Diocese of Calgary joins the universal Church in celebrating the election of Pope Leo XIV (Formerly Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost) as the 267th Successor of Saint Peter.
Elected on Thursday, May 8, 2025, Pope Leo XIV now begins his ministry as the Vicar of Christ and visible head of the Catholic Church on earth. We give thanks for the faithful leadership of Pope Francis and now entrust Pope Leo XIV to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

"Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 14 September 1955. As a member of the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.), in which he held various leadership positions, he dedicated many years of service to the Augustinian missions in Peru as a priest and seminary professor. He was eventually appointed Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, by Pope Francis. As a Bishop of the Church in Peru, he served as Vice President and member of the Permanent Council of the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as Prefect of the Dicastery of Bishops and elevated him to the College of Cardinals. Pope Leo XIV holds a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical College of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome." ~CCCB

Good Shepherd Sunday / World Day of Prayer for Vocations - May 10/11
The Fourth Sunday of Easter (May 10/11, 2025), or widely known as Good Shepherd Sunday is the World Day of Vocations. There will be a second collection for the work of vocations, in support of the education and formation of seminarians and the permanent diaconate program in our Diocese.
As St. Joseph Parish has been under the care of the Salvatorian Fathers, 2/3 of donations will be designated towards supporting vocations in the Salvatorian order. The other 1/3 will be designated towards supporting vocations in the Diocese of Calgary.
This Sunday, we invite all the faithful to pray particularly for our seminarians below who are discerning the call to the priesthood and preparing to serve the Church through their formation.

4th Sunday of Easter
In this Gospel reading Jesus declares that those who listen to his words “will never perish.” In the tradition of the Church this Sunday is known as “Good Shepherd Sunday”, and on the liturgical calendar it is highlighted as “World Day of Prayer for Vocations”, a Sunday which calls us to reflect on our own baptismal call and mission in life.
- Through our baptismal call we are each called to be Shepherd’s inviting others to respond to God’s call in their lives… How have you been called by God?
- How have you encouraged others to respond to their baptismal call to single, married, religious life, or the priesthood?
- Is our community doing anything special to celebrate Vocation Sunday? If not, why not?
